Visas legal

No more shortcuts for US visas — interviews are now mandatory for almost every visa category

From September 2: No More Shortcuts for US Visa Interviews

From September 2, 2025, nearly all nonimmigrant visa applicants will need to attend in-person interviews with US consular officers. The move ends age-based exemptions and “drop box” renewals for many categories, marking a significant change for students, business professionals, and frequent travelers.

What’s New

Earlier, some people could skip the interview. For example, students renewing visas, frequent travelers, children under 14, or seniors above 79.

From now on, most of these exemptions are gone. Whether you are applying for the first time or renewing your visa, you will likely need to go for an interview.

Are There Any Exceptions?

Yes, but very few.

Diplomats, officials of international organizations, and some travelers with valid renewals may still get an interview waiver.
However, U.S. officers can still ask for an interview if they want.
For citizens of 57 countries (like Afghanistan, Nigeria, Cuba, Iran, Venezuela, Zimbabwe), there are no exemptions at all.
India is not in this list, so Indian applicants may still get a few limited waivers.

What This Means for You

Longer waiting times: Because more people need interviews, appointment slots may take longer.
Rescheduling rules: From January 1, 2025, you can reschedule your appointment only once without paying again. If you miss it or try to reschedule more than once, you’ll need to pay a new visa fee.
Documents needed: You must carry the same DS-160 form confirmation page that you used while booking the appointment. If you filled a new form later, take both the old and new confirmations.

Why It’s Important

This change affects students, business travelers, professionals, and frequent visitors. Missing your appointment or not having the correct papers can cost you time, money, and even your travel plans.

Tips for Applicants

Apply early – Don’t wait till the last moment.

Check visa wait times online before planning your trip.

Keep documents ready – especially the DS-160 confirmation page.

Use your one reschedule wisely – don’t miss your slot.

👉 In short: Interviews are now the rule, not the exception. Plan ahead and be prepared.
